Logistics & Supply Chain Economics

Why Do Commodity Prices Vary Between Cities in Pakistan?

1. Agricultural Surplus Belts vs. High-Consumption Urban Centers

Pakistan's agricultural geography is characterized by intense regional specialization. Major produce belts—such as the Okara–Sahiwal–Pakpattan potato triangle, the Badin–Thatta winter tomato corridor, or the Sargodha citrus orchards—generate massive localized volume surpluses. In contrast, non-farming metropolises such as Islamabad, Rawalpindi, and Karachi depend entirely on multi-hundred-kilometer freight relays.

As a result, perishable produce in terminal consumer markets naturally trades at a 10% to 25% premium above source-district Mandi auctions, reflecting inter-city truck freight, highway toll tariffs, and loading labour (Palledari).

2. Perishability & In-Transit Spoilage

For delicate fresh vegetables such as tomatoes, green chilies, and soft fruits, transit losses often exceed 15% to 20% during summer months due to ambient heat and lack of refrigerated cold-chain transit. Commission agents (Arhtis) and wholesale buyers factor expected transit spoilage into the landed price at destination Mandis.

3. Diesel Freight Volatility & NLC Tariffs

Because over 90% of agricultural freight is transported via private trucks and Bedford fleet cartage, adjustments in OGRA High Speed Diesel (HSD) prices transmit directly into inter-district price spreads within 24 to 48 hours. A diesel price surge immediately widens the price spread between farm-gate districts and distant consumer markets.

💡 Consumer Purchasing Advice: To beat neighborhood retail markups, households purchasing weekly groceries are advised to buy in bulk (such as 5kg crates or 10kg bags) directly from primary wholesale fruit and vegetable markets on Tuesday or Wednesday mornings, when wholesale auction bidding typically settles lower than peak weekend sessions.
📢 Report Overcharging Above Notified District Ceilings:

All retailers are bound under the Price Control and Prevention of Profiteering and Hoarding Act not to exceed their local district Deputy Commissioner gazette rates. Report violators directly to your provincial authority:
